The requirement for Swept Path Analysis (SPA) is due to designs increasingly challenged by the relevant planning and highway authorities who need to be confident that the proposed layout is fit for purpose, particularly for sites where space for vehicle manoeuvres is limited.

Swept Path Analysis is a method used in transportation and urban planning to assess the movement and paths taken by the wheels and body of a vehicle as it manoeuvres through a specific path or space. The analysis helps determine whether a vehicle, such as a truck or bus, can navigate a given route or access a particular site without encountering obstructions.

The analysis considers the dimensions of the vehicle, including its wheelbase and turning radius, by simulating the path of the vehicle's wheels during various manoeuvres (such as right-turns), planners and engineers can identify potential conflicts with infrastructure, such as kerbs, signs, opposing vehicles or other objects.

Swept Path Analysis is particularly crucial for designing and optimising road layouts, car parks, intersections, and other spaces where vehicle movement is a key consideration. It helps ensure that the infrastructure can accommodate the intended vehicles and operations safely and efficiently.

Its function is to accurately assist with designs where vehicles need to be accommodated during vehicle operational scenarios or routes and is commonly known as ‘vehicle tracking'.

Still today, some designers model SPAs by hand, a labour-intensive and costly exercise. At Ayen Consulting, we use specialised CAD (Computer Aided Design) software that allows for the visualisation of the vehicle's path and potential conflicts with surrounding elements. This analysis process provides a fast and cost-efficient method of assessing alternative design layouts and sites.

Located 20 minutes from Avalon International Airport in Victoria, we provide a Swept Path Analysis Plan for a variety of sites including retail, commercial, industrial, residential, schools, universities and hospitals around Victoria, New South Wales, Perth, Northern Territory and Tasmania.

'Our Grassroots football club have made an application to build a clubhouse to improve facilities. The project has some complicated objections around car parking and traffic management. As a club we had no experience or knowledge with regards to this and needed a consultant to work with. I approached Kevin and from the outset it felt like he understood our needs, talked us through the process, created a high quality piece of work and met all deadlines asked of him. We are grateful for all of the work and support given to us and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ayen Consulting for this kind of work.'
